Supreme Court Rules Against Navajo Nation On Water Issue

The Supreme Court delivered a verdict on Thursday that went against the Navajo Nation, dismissing their lawsuit which contended that the federal government had a responsibility, as per an 1868 treaty, to formulate a plan for ensuring an adequate water supply for the tribe.

Authored by Justice Brett Kavanaugh, an appointee of former President Donald Trump, the 5-4 ruling saw the court’s three liberal justices and Justice Neil Gorsuch, another Trump appointee, dissenting from the decision.

The lawsuit involved the Navajo Nation in opposition to the U.S. government, as well as the states of Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. It revolved around a complex framework of agreements and court rulings that have shaped the allocation of water from the Colorado River among these states over several decades.
