Police have arrested a suspect in the on-campus murder of a former University of Georgia student. In a press briefing Friday, Police Chief Jeff Clarke identified the accused as Jose Antonio Ibarra, who has been charged in connection with the killing of nursing student Laken Hope Riley.
Ibarra, 26, was apprehended and is currently facing multiple charges, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery and kidnapping, among others. Ibarra, who resides in an apartment in Athens not far from the university, is not a U.S. citizen, though his exact immigration status remains unverified.
“I think this was a crime of opportunity,” said Clarke, emphasizing the conclusion from evidence that points to Ibarra operating solo.
The murder led to the suspension of classes on Thursday following the discovery of Riley’s body. The 22-year-old Augusta University nursing student, previously enrolled at the University of Georgia, was reported missing after failing to return from a jog. She was subsequently found with clear signs of blunt force trauma.
Riley, a graduate of River Ridge High School and an accomplished scholar-athlete, was remembered for her infectious enthusiasm for learning and generous spirit. Cherokee County schools Superintendent Brian Hightower expressed condolences, reflecting on the profound loss of a bright young life.
In response to the murder, law enforcement officials have stepped up investigations, analyzing security footage, and urging students to stay vigilant, especially around the wooded area where Riley was found.
The university plans to resume regular classes come Monday.
