Since the implementation of a law permitting driving privileges to individuals residing in the United States without legal status, tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants in Massachusetts have sought to obtain driver’s licenses.
As reported by Chris Van Buskirk of the Boston Herald, data from the state’s Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) indicates that approximately 100,000 individuals have sought appointments to acquire a learner’s permit since the law went into effect on July 1.
A significant majority of these appointment requests, comprising tens of thousands, are presumed to be from undocumented immigrants who gained the right to obtain a driver’s license in Massachusetts after voters sanctioned the law through a statewide ballot initiative in the latter part of last year.
