According to a report by Religion News Service, the Texas Legislature has passed a bill allowing public schools to hire chaplains to provide mental health services.
The bill, introduced by GOP state Rep. Cole Hefner, would enable schools to employ chaplains as volunteers to provide support, services, and programs for students as assigned by the board of trustees of the district or the governing body of the school.
The legislation was passed by the Texas House with a vote of 89-58, while the state Senate had passed a version of the bill last month.
