South Dakota Sen. John Thune, the No. 2 Senate Republican, has endorsed GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Thune told Fox News Digital exclusive about his endorsement.
“I support former President Trump’s campaign to win the presidency, and I intend to do everything I can to see that he has a Republican majority in the Senate working with him to restore American strength at home and abroad,” he told the news outlet.
He also said: “The primary results in South Carolina make clear that Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee for president in this year’s pivotal presidential election. The choice before the American people is crystal clear: It’s Donald Trump or Joe Biden.”
Thune, the Senate minority whip, seemed less certain in August 2023.
“The [legal] cases are pilling up,” Thune said. “We’ll just let the justice system work. Clearly he’s going to have an opportunity to have a trial with a jury of his peers, and he’s innocent in our system until proven guilty, so we’ll see how the process plays out.”
And he was critical of Trump’s connection to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, saying the then-president had done “a disservice to people across this country.”
