Top Military General Mark Milley Retires

General Mark Milley will conclude his term on Friday after a tumultuous tenure as the highest-ranking US military officer, marked by numerous domestic and international crises.
General CQ Brown will succeed him, becoming the second Black officer to hold the position of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, following in the footsteps of Colin Powell. This transition takes place during Lloyd Austin’s tenure as Secretary of Defense, making him the nation’s first Black defense secretary.
His four-year tenure witnessed significant events, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, Donald Trump’s refusal to accept the outcome of the presidential election, and nationwide protests against police brutality.
