Over 50 pilot whales tragically died in Scotland after becoming stranded on a beach located on the Isle of Lewis. This incident marks the largest mass stranding in the country in several decades.
Authorities were notified of the distressing situation on Sunday morning at approximately 0600 GMT. Despite valiant efforts to refloat over a dozen living whales, these attempts proved unsuccessful.
Ultimately, rescue teams made the difficult decision to euthanize the remaining stranded whales based on welfare considerations. A total of 55 whales did not survive the ordeal, while only one whale is believed to have managed to survive the stranding.
