‘Transportation Disaster’ Closes Schools, Leaves Students On Buses For Hours

A sense of anger and frustration pervaded a crowded school board meeting in Louisville, Kentucky, on Tuesday evening, stemming from an incident where students were left stranded last week, leading to the closure of schools. Local officials labeled this situation a “transportation disaster.”
The primary cause of this turmoil was the recent introduction of a technologically-driven bus routing system. The implementation of this bus route plan in Jefferson County, Kentucky, aimed to streamline efficiency but had the opposite effect. Computer algorithms miscalculated the necessary time between stops, resulting in extensive delays and causing significant concern among parents.
The impact of the failed system was evident in the experiences of parents like Elizabeth Bramel, whose son didn’t arrive home until after 7 p.m. She expressed her distress, stating, “It was horrible because I had no clue where he was.”
