Former President Trump made comments about a government shutdown in an NBC “Meet the Press” interview aired Sunday, marking journalist Kristen Welker debut as the show’s new host.
Trump, seeking 2024 reelection, spoke in response to the question of whether conservatives should abandon their threat to shut down the government at the end of the month over spending concerns, considering HouseSpeaker Kevin McCarthy Ok’d an impeachment inquiry into President Biden, seen as concession to his conference’s conservative wing.
“No, I think if they don’t get a fair deal – we have to save our country,” Trump said. “We’re at $35 trillion in debt, we have to save our country. I’d shut down the government if they can’t make an appropriate deal, absolutely.”
