President-elect Trump is hosting a slew of Republican governors at his Mar-a-Lago estate on Thursday night, seeking to get state leaders on the same page before he takes office later this month.
Among the expected attendees are Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin and Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R). The meeting is expected to focus on how governors can help implement Trump’s agenda in the coming months.
States are likely to play a key role in Trump’s pledge to carry out mass deportations of immigrants with criminal records, as the president-elect has said he will rely on local law enforcement.
Politico first reported that DeSantis would attend the meeting. DeSantis ran against Trump in the 2024 GOP primary. Trump repeatedly attacked the Florida governor, accusing him of being ungrateful for his support during his first gubernatorial bid in 2018, until DeSantis ended his candidacy and endorsed Trump.
Reynolds, who will also be there on Thursday night, drew Trump’s ire when she endorsed DeSantis in the primary.
“Excited to meet with President @realDonaldTrump tonight at Mar-a-Lago,” Reynolds posted on the social platform X. “I stand ready to help enact his agenda of Making America Safe, Prosperous, and Great Again!”
