UCLA Professor Regrets X Post About Military Resistance To Trump

A University of California, Los Angeles professor is apologizing for suggesting a military coup to stop President Trump from further aligning the U.S. with Russia.

The criminal law professor, Peter Arenella, spark controversy Saturday when he posted on X: “At this point, my only hope for the U.S. to avoid becoming an ally to Russia is a violent resistance by our military. Tragic to say that because the military is trained to avoid any politically motivated intervention.”

Trump as early as his first term, and increasingly in the early weeks of his second term, has said he has good working relationship with Russia President Vladimir Putin, whose country has long been considered one of the United States’ biggest global threats.

Trump most recently has appeared to try to negotiate with Russia and much as Ukraine in an effort to end the countries’ three-year-long war.

After facing backlash on X, including from one person who whom allegedly sent the professor’s post to the FBI Director Kash Patel, Arenella apologized Sunday, saying he doesn’t think a military coup is a good idea and regrets “that post.”
