House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) condemned the Biden administration for discussing amnesty for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients with the President of Mexico as bipartisan talks continue on a border security agreement aimed at curbing the influx of illegal migration.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas held a meeting on Wednesday, during which there were discussions about the benefits of regularizing the situation of Hispanic migrants who have been undocumented for several years and the DACA beneficiaries. A joint statement released by Mexico noted the importance of DACA recipients as a vital part of the US economy and society, and called for a solution to their situation.
However, Johnson criticized the announcement in a post on social media, stating it’s “unconscionable” to discuss amnesty for illegal immigrants while America experiences the worst border crisis in the nation’s history.
Johnson called on President Biden to prioritize policies focused on deterring illegal immigration, not attracting it. Johnson also accused the administration of lacking genuine intentions to resolve the humanitarian and national security crisis.
In light of bipartisan negotiations on border security, a working group of senators has spent weeks deliberating on a border security deal aimed at being added to a defense spending bill, which includes aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. Negotiators on both sides have acknowledged the significance of the border measure in passing the legislation through both chambers.
Johnson’s remarks have highlighted concerns about the government’s handling of illegal immigration and whether amnesty is a viable solution. The discussion with the President of Mexico comes amid a surge of migrants at the southern border, with many pointing to the Biden administration’s policies as the cause.
