On Thursday, the Virginia Supreme Court ruled in favor of reinstating a lawsuit filed by a high school teacher who was terminated for refusing to use pronouns inconsistent with a student’s biological sex.
Peter Vlaming, who taught French in the West Point School District for seven years, faced dismissal after he chose not to use pronouns aligning with a student’s asserted gender identity.
While Vlaming adopted the student’s new preferred name, he refrained from using the preferred pronouns when the student was not present. The school insisted on Vlaming’s use of the student’s preferred pronouns, leading to his termination.
