West Virginia Governor Signs ‘Riley Gaines Act,’ Defining Sex-Based Terms

Governor Patrick Morrisey signed the Riley Gaines Act into law Wednesday, defining sex-based terms like “male” and “female” in the state code to allow for “single-sex private spaces.”

Senate Bill 456, also known as the Riley Gaines Act, enters the definitions of “male” and “female” into West Virginia state law and will only allow those who are a female at birth in women’s single-sex spaces, such as locker rooms, bathrooms, rape crisis centers, dormitories and prisons, officials say.
