White Democratic Senate Candidates Called To Drop Out Over ‘Equality’

White Democrats in California’s Senate race should consider stepping aside in favor of a Black female candidate, argues a guest essay in The Washington Post.
The race to fill the late U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s seat has seen Democratic Reps. Katie Porter and Adam Schiff enter the contest. However, author and podcast host Steve Phillips is urging them to make way for U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee, a Black woman, in order to demonstrate a commitment to diversity.
Phillips points to the significant role Black women play in the Democratic Party and the party’s acknowledgment of their underrepresentation in national leadership. Given this context, he suggests that the best course of action for Schiff and Porter, who are White, would be to support Lee’s candidacy.
