Democrat Rep. Pramila Jayapal has walked back her accusation this past weekend that Israel is a “racist” state.
The Washington lawmaker and chairwoman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus on Sunday revised her remarks from a day earlier, saying, “I do not believe the idea of Israel as a nation is racist.”
However, Jayapal made clear that she still contends that Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s policies are racist.
“Netanyahu’s extreme right-wing government has engaged in discriminatory and outright racist policies,” said Jayapal, who after 9/11 fought against anti-Muslim bias.
On Saturday, she said: “I want you to know that we have been fighting to make it clear that Israel is a racist state.”
