Former President Donald Trump has urged Special Counsel Jack Smith to dismiss his case over the mishandling of classified documents after a decision was made not to charge President Joe Biden for a similar issue.
Special Counsel Robert Hur concluded his investigation into Biden’s handling of classified documents without recommending charges. The report indicated that although Biden did incorrectly manage certain documents, it did not constitute criminal conduct. Hur cited Biden’s cooperation and lapses in memory as factors in the decision, mentioning Biden’s challenges in recalling specific dates, including the end of his vice-presidential term and the year his son passed away.
President Trump responded to Hur’s report by demanding the dismissal of his case, claiming he was a victim of discrimination in the legal process. On social media and in statements, he emphasized that his situation was handled under the Presidential Records Act, arguing that it was less severe than Biden’s and insisted that he had fully cooperated with the investigation.
Trump is currently facing 40 felony charges, including 32 counts of willful retention of national defense information, as part of Smith’s ongoing investigation into his own handling of classified materials.
Biden expressed relief over Hur’s decision and reiterated his full cooperation during the course of the “exhaustive investigation,” which he felt he owed to the public.
