House conservatives are combining the nation’s defense budget with amendments aimed at what they perceive as the Biden administration’s infusion of “woke” politics into the military through diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs that they argue promote radical race theories.
Within a 10-hour timeframe on July 13, the Republican-controlled House repealed the Department of Defense’s abortion travel policy and prohibited DOD healthcare programs from offering gender transition procedures.
They also introduced several proposed amendments targeting DEI programs, including some that were unsuccessful, as part of a must-pass defense budget typically approved through bipartisan consensus.
