A House Republican subcommittee took a significant step on Friday by advancing legislation that proposes a $1 billion funding reduction for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and seeks to bring overall funding for related agencies back to 2022 levels.
In a party-line vote, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies approved the bill. It includes a 9% cut in funding specifically allocated to the FBI.
Within the $1 billion reduction, $400 million would be slashed from FBI salaries and related expenses, accompanied by new spending restrictions imposed on the bureau. If enacted, the FBI’s budget would decrease from $11.3 billion in the current fiscal year to $10.3 billion in 2024.
